Who is Ray Escobar?
Ray Escobar, born in Rotterdam with Aruban background, came in contact with music from an early age through his equally musically savvy father. Papa Escobar, who used to play in various bands, raised his son with the strong presence of music. With influences such as Celia Cruz, Michael Jackson and Buju Banton, Ray started young and strong on his collection of musical baggage. From early on he knew he wanted to DJ, inspired by the ‘bubbling’ legend DJ Moortje and his famous underground tapes of the late ‘90s.
The ball began to roll when Ray Escobar got to play for a birthday at Rotterdam’s Hemingway jazz café in 2010. The owner approached him afterwards with the request to play at the cafe more often, which became every Friday. This was the start of Boogie Friday, which quickly became a force to be reckoned with in Rotterdam.
With great passion for music, Ray Escobar swallows audiences into his energetic sets. The silver lining in his sets is hiphop, combines with styles such as soul, house, funk, RnB, reggae and dancehall.
His up-to-date and diverse musicality is the reason why Ray has played at parties and festivals all over the Netherlands. He shared the stage with some of his heroes DJ Spinna, DJ Jazzy Jeff and A-Trak. Also he co-founded ‘THE SCENARIO’, a bi-monthly party at the infamous jazzclub BIRD, which has grown into the strongest HipHop/RnB club night of Rotterdam.
